What is llms.txt?

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt and sitemap.xml?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they're allowed to fetch, and sitemap.xml lists every URL on the site so search engines can find and prioritize them for indexing — neither one describes what a page actually contains. llms.txt is a curated, human-readable summary: a short list of the pages that matter most, each with a one-line description, meant to be read once by a language model rather than crawled link-by-link. The three files are complementary, not overlapping — none of them replaces another.
