What is voice search SEO?

Voice search is the practice of speaking a query aloud to a device or assistant instead of typing it — asking a smart speaker or phone assistant a question rather than entering keywords into a search box. Voice search SEO is the work of optimizing content so it can be found and read aloud in answer to those spoken questions.

Typed and spoken queries differ in structure: typing favors short keyword fragments, while speaking favors full, conversational questions. Someone typing might search "weather Chicago weekend," but someone using voice search is more likely to ask, "What's the weather going to be like in Chicago this weekend?" Same underlying need, but the spoken version is longer, more specific, and phrased like a real question rather than a string of keywords.

Content written to directly and concisely answer those natural, conversational questions tends to perform better both for voice search and for today's AI answer engines. That's because assistants and AI answer engines typically scan for a clear, direct answer near the top of a page or section rather than extracting one from a long, unstructured paragraph — so a heading phrased as a question, followed immediately by a plain-language answer, is easier for both a voice assistant and an AI system to lift and read aloud.

Voice search SEO overlaps closely with two related concepts worth understanding: matching content to what a searcher actually wants, covered in the glossary entry on search intent, and targeting the specific, lower-competition phrases covered in the glossary entry on long-tail keywords.
